This species is closely related to J. paniculata; it might possibly be better to consider it merely as a variety of that species. Both show a great resemblance in habit as well as in the shape and size of the leaves and inflorescences. The main difference is found in the shape of the sepals. Typical J. zollingeri has the same short and dense tomentum as J. paniculata var. tomentosa.

The species resembles Erycibe praecipua Prain ssp. borneensis Hoogland, from which it differs by theglabrous inner side of the corolla, the shape of the anthers (broader than long), and the conical (not funnel-shaped)stigma.
