Description
Habit:
Deciduous woody twiner or trailer from woody rootstock to 2 cm diam.; stems to 1 m and longer, c. 15 mm diam. at base; indumentum of 2 types: long, yellow tubercle-based hairs and shorter, crimped, whitish hairs.
Leaves:
Leaves ovate or broadly ovate, 4–19 by 3.5–14 cm, base cordate, apex obtuse or shortly acuminate, apiculate, upper side sparsely pilose, underside softly villose; lateral veins c. 12 per side; petiole c. 5 cm.
Inflorescences:
Inflorescence axillary, several-flowered; peduncle to 2 cm; bracts ovate-lanceolate, 2–3.8 by 0.7 cm, often undulate-crisped, attenuate, outside brownish, tawny, or whitish tomentose; pedicels 3–15 mm.
Flowers:
Flower sepals subequal, ovate-oblong to oblong-oblanceolate, 10–12 by 6–7 mm, obtuse or rounded, outer 3 appressed pilose medially or glabrous, inner 2 glabrous; corolla tubular-funnelform, c. 5 cm long, dark purple or maroon, limb 2.5–3.0 cm diam., subentire, glabrous outside; stamens included, filaments 11–13 mm long, bases dilated, shortly pilose, anthers 4–5 mm; pistil included, disc annular, 5-lobed, ovary glabrous, style c. 45 mm.
Fruits:
Berry globose, c. 10 mm diam., red, enclosed in accrescent, reddish calyx.
Seeds:
Seeds c. 6 mm, brown, glabrous.
