Mexico, West Indies, Central and South America; introduced into the Old World (cf. Ooststroom 1939, 1953; Verdcourt 1963; Austin 1980; Gonçalves 1987; LeJoly and Lisowski 1993).
Usually along waterways. In Asia A. martinicensis is a weed of rice paddies, ditches, marches, lake and pond margins. Found from sea level to ca 140 m elev.
