Cladostigma dioicum Radlk, Abh.naturwiss.Ver.Bremen. 8 : 412 (1883). Type: Eritrea, Habab, Hildebrandt 489 (Holotype B); Eritrea, Valle Damas, 29 Feb. 1892, Schweinfurth & Riva 647 (neotype K) designated by Sebsebe Demissew (1996).

Synonyms: 

Evolvulus lavae, Schweinf. ex Deflers in Bull. Soc. Bot. France 43: 121 (1896).

Hippocrepistigma fruticosum, Deflers nom. nud. based on Deflers1 172.

Description

Habit: 
Erect shrub 50 cm to 2 m high. Branches densely pubescent.
Leaves: 
alternate,solitary, not fascicled, pubescent on both sides; lamina ovate or elliptic to broadly ovate, rarely ± orbicular, 4.5 - 40 x 3 - 25 mm, acute to retuse at the apex, rounded to cuneate at the base; petiole 1.5 - 10 mm long, pubescent.
Inflorescences: 
Male inflorescence axillary, cymose, pubescent; peduncle 0 - 12 mm long. Female inflorescence axillary, solitary, cymose; peduncle 0 - 2.5 mm long.
Flowers: 
Male pedicel 3.5 - 5 mm long. Sepals 5, slightly unequal, 2.5 - 3.5 x 1 - 2 mm, ovate to elliptic, acute at the apex, pubescent on the outside. Corolla 7.5 - 10 mm long, in fresh flowers 5-lobed with tube 5.5 - 6 mm long, each lobe 2 x 3 mm; older ones 5-parted, opening to the base at maturity, each lamina obovate to spathulate, 7.5 - 10 x 3 - 4 mm, pubescent on the outside. Stamens 5, ± equal; filaments 4 - 4.5 mm long, articulated at the base, hairy; anthers 1.5 mm long. Pistillode with 2 styles, 5.5 - 7 mm long, fused 1/4 to 1/2 the length and with Ushaped stigma branches. Female pedicel 2.5 - 5 mm long extending to 7 mm long in fruit. Sepals 5, slightly unequal in width, three outer ones broadly elliptic, 5 - 6 x 3.5 - 5, 2 inner ones elliptic to spathulate, 5.5 x 2.5 mm. Corolla 6 - 7.5 mm long, tube 3 - 4 mm long, 5-lobed, each lobe 3 - 3.5 x 1.5 - 3 mm, pubescent on the outside. Ovary glabrous; styles 2 - 4 mm long, with branched stigma lobes. Staminodes 5, ± equal, with filaments 3 - 4 mm long, slightly dilated at the base.

Seeds: 
Seeds (young) brownish, 2 x 2 mm, rugose on the surface.

General comments: 

The species is easily distinguished by the characteristic erect habit, ovate to orbicular leaf-lamina, male flowers with filaments articulated and hairy at the base and pistillode with styles fused 1/3, to 1/2 of their length, and glabrous ovary.
