Description

Habit: 
Lianas. Stems dark brown, terete, densely verruculose, sparsely lenticellate and appressed hispid.
Leaves: 
Petiole 7–9 cm, shiny appressed hispid; leaf blade broadly ovate to circular, 10–14 × 9.5–12 cm, leathery, adaxial surface sparsely yellowish appressed hispid, base rounded or truncate, apex abruptly caudate-acuminate; lateral veins 7 or 8 pairs.
Inflorescences: 
Inflorescences unknown. Peduncle 7.5–12.5 cm in fruit.
Flowers: 
Sepals reddish purple, ovate, nearly equal, ca. 13 × 9 mm, thick, becoming enlarged, leathery, yellowish villous abaxially, glabrous adaxially, apex acute.
Fruits: 
Berry ovoid, ca. 1.5 cm.
Seeds: 
Seed 1, pale dull yellow, flattened ovoid, ca. 1 cm, smooth, glabrous.

Distribution: 

China (SE Yunnan). Endemic; known only from the type gathering made in Marlipo Xian.

on calcareous mountain slopes; ca. 1100 m.

Common names and uses: 
ma li po yin bei teng (Chinese).
General comments: 

The place of publication given here differs from that stated in Fl. China 16: 316. 1995. The original authors published this name twice in 1979: the Fl. Yunnaica account appeared in March 1979; the Fl. Reip. Pop. Sin 64(1) account was only published in May 1979. Thus the later name is an isonym, to be discarded (K. Gandhi, pers. comm. 22 Sept. 2011).
