Description
Habit:
Woody climbers; stems erect, hirsute with brownish hairs, later glabrescent.
Leaves:
Leaves ovate, elliptic-oblong, or obovate, 9–20 by 3.5–11 cm, base rounded or shortly attenuate, apex acuminate, upper side glabrous or nearly so, underside strigose-hairy along veins only; lateral veins 5 or 6 pairs; petiole 1.5–5 cm, sparsely hirsute.
Inflorescences:
Inflorescence densely capitate; peduncle stout, 1.5–5 cm long; outer bracts broadly ovate to narrowly lanceolate, 2.5–4 cm long, apex obtuse to acute, sparsely brownish-hirsute outside, inner bracts smaller, narrower, all persistent; pedicels very short or none.
Flowers:
Flower sepals ovate-oblong, long-attenuate, 3 outer ones 11–15 mm, of which acumen is 6–9 mm, long-hirsute outside, inner ones 9–13 mm; corolla funnelform, 4.5–6 cm long, white with purple, pink, or red stripe on each lobe, limb subentire, midpetaline bands hairy outside, otherwise glabrous; stamens included, filament bases glandular-pilose; pistil included, ovary glabrous, 2-celled.
Fruits:
Berry ovoid, c. 12 mm long, pink.
Seeds:
Seed 1.
