Abstract:

The names Ipomoea hederacea, I. indica, I. nil and I. purpurea have caused identification and nomenclatural problems since Linnaeus revised his own treatment of the taxa in 1762. Most people including Linnaeus, have mixed two or more species under one name. Recently, the typification and the identity of the names involved have been discussed by Verdcourt (Taxon 6: 231-233. 1957; Taxon 7: 84-85. 1958). O'Donnell (Lilloa 29: 197-204. 1959), Shinners (Taxon 14: 231-234. 1965), and Fosberg (Bot. Not. 129: 36. 1976). In spite of these papers, the nomenclature remains difficult. Since there is still confusion, a summary of the important names seems indicated.
