Abstract:

The family Convolvulaceae includes 22 genera and 126 species in central Africa. The present paper is a taxonomic treatment of 17 genera of this family in Zaire, Rwanda and Burundi, including Dichondra, Falkia, Evolvulus, Bonamia, Metaporana, Dipteropeltis, Jacquemontia, Convolvulus, Hewittia, Aniseia, Xenostegia Lepistemon, Mina, Stictocardia, Astripomoea, Turbina, and Argyreia. Altogether they consist of twenty-six species, two subspecies and one variety in the area concerned. A key to all genera of the Convolvulaceae in Central Africa is given, and all taxa are described in detail and ecological and distributional data for each species are provided, with taxonomic notes to aid in the correct identification, if necessary. Fourteen taxa are illustrated with line drawings. Ipomoea angustifolia and Merremia alatipes are reduced to subspecies of Xenostegia tridentata as X. tridentata subsp. angustifolia, comb. nov., and X. tridentata subsp. alatipes, comb. nov., respectively. Dipteropeltis mayumbensis is reduced to synonymy with D. poranoides.
